I am happy to write letters of recommendation for students, but there are important guidelines you must follow so I can write the strongest letter possible.
I will not accept requests for college recommendations after October 15 or after I have received 15 requests, whichever comes first
All recommendations will be submitted to Guidance by the Wednesday before Thanksgiving
A strong letter says more than “Sally took my course in X and got a grade of Y.” Your transcript already shows grades. What matters is what I can say about your character, such as:
Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm
Honesty and integrity
Responsibility and punctuality
Demeanor and personality
If I do not know you well enough to speak to these qualities, my letter will be limited to academic performance. If I am the best option you have, I will still write the letter I can, but I will be honest based on my observations.
Ask early. A few weeks’ notice is preferred
Tell me what qualities or skills you want emphasized
Complete the Recommendation Request Form – I cannot begin your letter without this:
➡ Fill out the form here ⬅
Provide supporting details and remind me of examples from class or activities that show your strengths
Include a resume or transcript if helpful, and point out specific items I can reference
Give clear deadlines and instructions for submission
Remind me a few days before the deadline
Confirm that I have sent the letter
If you do not hear back, follow up politely
Example reminder:
“I just wanted to remind you that the letter of recommendation to MIT is due next Friday. Thanks.”
